Composable Document Extraction: Escaping the Single-Parser Trap

You know what ruins a Tuesday? You integrated a popular parser in your project. The demo looked perfect with clean markdown, structured tables, fast processing. Then production starts.

Footnotes vanished from financial reports. Nested tables turned into garbled text. The parser missed the bottom table entirely. Processing a 50-page document? It extracts 40 entries, then just… stops. And when you switch to another parser for better table accuracy, a 6MB PDF now takes a full minute instead of the few seconds you expected.

Here’s the problem: you’re choosing one parser and hoping it handles everything. That’s like choosing between a hammer and a screwdriver and expecting it to build the entire house.

This article shows Kudra’s workflow approach: design extraction pipelines by composing specialized components (OCR for speed, vision models for accuracy, table extractors for structure), then deploy them via auto-generated API code. Instead of fighting a single parser’s limitations, you build adaptive workflows that route documents to appropriate components and when formats change, you modify the workflow, not your codebase.

The Single-Parser Trap

Every team follows this pattern:

The problem isn’t LlamaParse or Unstructured. It’s the assumption that one parser is able to handle all documents.

Composable Components, Not Monolithic Parsers

Kudra doesn’t force you to choose one parser. It lets you compose extraction workflows from specialized components, each optimized for specific tasks:

  • OCR Component: Fast text extraction (digital and scanned)
  • Table Extraction: Structure-preserving table recognition
  • Vision LLM: Contextual understanding for validation and enrichment

Instead of fighting a single parser’s weaknesses, you build the perfect pipeline for your own use case.

There are two paths you can choose when using kudra :

Path 1: Custom Workflow → Project → Code Snippet

  1. Build custom extraction workflow (drag-and-drop components)
  2. Create project linked to that workflow
  3. Get auto-generated code snippet
  4. Integrate into your application

Path 2: Template → Project → Code Snippet

  1. Choose pre-built template (invoices, receipts, contracts, etc.)
  2. Create project from template
  3. Get auto-generated code snippet
  4. Integrate into your application

Building Kudra Workflows That Handle Failures

Financial reports are one of the hardest document types to extract reliably. Nested tables, multi-level headers, and dense footnotes consistently expose the weak points of tools like LlamaParse and Unstructured. This walkthrough focuses on a practical, step-by-step workflow that is designed specifically to survive those failure modes.

Step 1: Design an Adaptive Workflow in Kudra

The workflow is built visually, with each component handling a specific responsibility instead of relying on a single parser to do everything. All you have to do id go do workflow builder in kudra and click on create new workflow.

The process starts with a document OCR component (activate the pdf and image toggle or any type you need then click on the plus button to find the components ). The goal here is coverage, not perfection, this step ensures no text is skipped or silently dropped halfway through the report.

Next comes a structure-preserving table extraction component. This is where nested financial tables are handled correctly, keeping parent–child relationships intact instead of flattening or garbling them. Unlike general-purpose parsers, this step is optimized specifically for complex layouts and returns a clear Json.

A vision-based LLM component follows, dedicated to enrichment and verification. Instead of acting as a parser, it visually re-reads the document to identify footnotes, reference markers, margin notes, and header or footer text that text-based extraction may miss or misplace. Each detected footnote is verified against the page layout, preserved with its original numbering, and linked back to the table, figure, or paragraph it qualifies, ensuring context is added, not hallucinated.

The workflow ends with a validation component that checks completeness and confidence before producing structured JSON output.

Step 2: Create a Project Linked to the Workflow

Once the workflow is finalized, it’s linked to a project. This step turns the workflow into a reusable, production-ready asset. Go to kudras project page and follow the steps to link the workflow to your project.

The project defines the environment (production), binds the workflow to an API endpoint, and assigns a unique project identifier. From this point on, every document processed through the project follows the same extraction logic, no manual reconfiguration, no hidden parser behavior changes.

Step 3: Use the Auto-Generated API

With the project created, Kudra automatically generates an integration interface for running document analysis. Go to your project and click on the code icon on top.

You’ll get a code snippet that looks like this:

Because the workflow already handles nested tables, footnotes, and long documents, there’s no need for document-specific tuning or fallback logic. Each report is processed end-to-end using the same reliable pipeline.

Step 4: Integrate Into Your Application

The final step is integrating the project into your application or data pipeline. Uploaded financial reports are passed through the workflow, validated for completeness, and stored with footnotes preserved alongside the extracted financial data.

					from kudra_cloud_client import KudraCloudClient

def extract_documents_with_kudra(
    token: str,
    files_dir: str = "documents",
    project_run_id: str = ""
):
    """
    Analyze documents using KudraCloudClient.

    Args:
        token (str): Authentication token for Kudra Cloud.
        files_dir (str): Path to the documents directory.
        project_run_id (str): Project run ID.

    Returns:
        dict: Analysis result from Kudra Cloud.
    """
    kudra_cloud = KudraCloudClient(token=token)
    result = kudra_cloud.analyze_documents(
        files_dir=files_dir,
        project_run_id=project_run_id
    )
    return result

# Example usage
# result = extract_documents_with_kudra(token="YOUR_TOKEN", project_run_id="YOUR_PROJECT_ID")
# print(result)

This ensures that downstream systems (analytics, databases, or RAG pipelines) receive data that hasn’t lost critical context during parsing. the results are in a json file so you can add further processig in your function if you only want specific details.

From Extraction to Production Reliability

Another quiet failure mode of many document pipelines is scale. Tools that work in demos struggle in production, timeouts, hard limits, and unpredictable latency become the norm. By composing specialized components rather than overloading a single model, Kudra avoids these bottlenecks. There’s no arbitrary cutoff after dozens of entries, no minute-long delays per document, and no need to re-run entire pipelines because one step failed silently.

The result is not just better extraction, but predictable extraction: something most teams only realize they need after things break.

Why Kudra’s Workflow Approach Wins

You could build multimodal enrichment pipelines by chaining APIs: call a PDF parser, call a table extractor, call GPT-4V for images, write glue code to combine outputs. Teams do this. It’s brittle, expensive, and hard to maintain.

Kudra’s workflow model gives you:

1. Visual Pipeline Composition Drag components onto a canvas. Connect them. No code. Changes take minutes instead of days refactoring Python scripts.

2. Built-In Component Library Pre-configured OCR, table extraction, and vision LLM components. No hunting for APIs or managing credentials across services.

3. Parallel Processing by Default Text, tables, and images process simultaneously. Kudra handles orchestration. You get maximum throughput without managing workers and queues.

4. Unified Output Schema All components output compatible JSON. No custom parsers translating between incompatible formats.

5. Any Vector Database Kudra outputs standard embeddings. Load them into Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, ChromaDB, whatever you’re using. No vendor lock-in.

6. Iterate Without Breaking Want to add chart extraction to an existing text pipeline? Add one component. Test. Deploy. Existing flows keep working.

Final Thoughts

By the end of this workflow, the common failure cases are gone. Footnotes aren’t lost. Nested tables stay intact. Long reports don’t mysteriously stop halfway through. And performance remains stable even as volume grows.

This isn’t about replacing LlamaParse or Unstructured with yet another parser. It’s about accepting a hard truth: document understanding is a systems problem, not a single-model problem.

When workflows are designed to adapt (rather than assume perfection) you stop fighting your documents and start trusting your data.
